ADVOCACY
PDNK works to identify gaps in policies that affect pastoralist’s communities in Kenya by mobilizing communities to interrogate and generate issues of concern in their respective regions. This way PDNK ensures grassroots pastoralists identify their own issues, determine policy interventions and thus enable them to engage in policy making processes on issues concerning their livelihoods and well-being. Through advocacy, PDNK engages the media in lobbying/championing pastoralist rights and privileges as a strategic mind-set changer and opinion shaping partner

CAPACITY BUILDING
This involves training of pastoralist communities on policy advocacy, implementation and influencing as well as social movements for change. PDNK ensures the participation of pastoralists in policy formulation processes and other important national processes.

GENDER MAINSTREAMING AND GOVERNANCE
PDNK carries out activities which are meant to ensure gender balance within pastoralist communities as part of its women empowerment approach. It undertakes programmes which focus on strategizing on how to increase the participation of women in decision making processes thus creating opportunities for self-improvement

RESEARCH
PDNK conducts desk surveys on various issues affecting pastoralist’s in Kenya and disseminate the findings to various interest groups to sensitize them on the plight of pastoralists and seek interventions as prescribed by the communities. It identifies policy gaps and establishes ways in which it impacts on pastoralist livelihoods and link this with duty bearers

PROTECTION OF PASTRORALIST MINORITY RIGHTS
PDNK engages in the protection and promotion of the rights of pastoralists’ minority groups in Kenya, it also ensures that pastoralists' intellectual property rights are protected. Through advocacy PDNK seeks to ensure that community lands, natural resources, indigenous knowledge and expressions and ecological rights of pastoralists are preserved and safeguarded against exploitation

CREATING LINKAGES
As an advocacy organization PDNK partners with other organizations that recognize pastoralists and other minority groups locally and internationally to advocate for practical Rights Based Approaches in addressing problems/issues confronting these communities.

Pastoralist Development Network - of Kenya

We are an advocacy NGO established under a Trust deed number 791 DI 4453128 in 2003. The network is a conglomeration of 60 pastoralists’ individuals, NGOs and CBOs and non-pastoralist institutions and individuals supporting pastoralists’ development process in Kenya. It draws its membership from North Rift, South Rift, North Eastern and Upper Eastern regions of Kenya representing 14 pastoralist Counties. Its mission is to lobby for the inclusion of the pastoralist agenda in mainstream development with the vision of a prosperous pastoralist society.
