One dead, 12 injured after KWS rangers clash with residents of Kinna, Isiolo County

One person died, while 12 others are nursing injuries at Maua Methodist Hospital after Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers at Bisanadi Park allegedly opened fire on protesters Kinna, Isiolo County. Tension still remained high following the confrontation as angry residents protested the mysterious disappearance of three people last week. isiolo kws

Residents of Kinna took to the street for the second time Tuesday protesting against KWS rangers for allegedly kidnapping and killing three people last week. The angry residents blocked the busy Garba-Tulla-Kinna road for the better part of the day on Monday demanding that the KWS hands over the three, dead or alive.

The locals claimed that the three went missing last week after they were tracked and kidnapped by KWS rangers along Duse-Bibi and Kinna road.Nura Dera Nura, a resident, claimed more than 13 people have gone missing in mysterious circumstances in the last two years in Kinna Ward alone and appealed to the government to investigate the disappearances.

RANGERS HARASSING LOCALS

Mr Nura said the KWS officers have been harassing and intimidating the locals who have co-existed with wild animals for years and called for quick action to compensate the affected families. Isiolo Governor Godana Doyo said that 10 rangers from the county will be sent to guard Bisanadi Park adding that investigations had been launched to track down the cartels behind the mysterious disappearance of the missing people.

The governor who consoled the families of the missing people raised concerns over the extra-judicial killings allegedly committed by the rangers and demanded for explanation."It is unacceptable that rangers who are supposed to protect people’s lives and wild animals are now turning on innocent people by killing, intimidating and harassing them," said the governor.

Isiolo County Commissioner Wanyama Musiambo confirmed that more than 70 bullets were recovered at the scene and urged residents to stop pointing fingers at the National Government but instead blame the real culprits. He said thorough investigations must be done to establish the cause of the disappearance of the three, adding that the culprits must be brought to book.
